Scaffolding Literacy Instruction (SLI), think #2

Just to be clear, I want to remind myself that unless the kids have been traditionally (“traditionally” meaning through TPRS!) prepared with their own stories using the upcoming vocabulary, the reading will not be theirs. It’s also still going to be important to work in those parallel stories. I can’t let myself head off into focusing on reading first here. The kids are first. I need to talk to them first.

One of the parts that I liked about the SLI folks was that they said it was absolutely necessary to establish what the kids know about the topic, what they think about it, and to learn about them for later use as we discuss the story. It was as if we have the vocabulary (PQA) to talk about that, and they don’t yet.
